In addition to her academic writing, Schirmer has written popular essays for national media outlets like espnW, The Progressive, Jacobin and more. Her work often focuses on the immense and varied struggles for human dignity, from the labor of public school employees to the trials of professional athletes. As Annie Dillard notes in her famous essay, ‘I have always maintained that if you looked closely enough you could see the wind.” Attempting to see what moves us all, yet often goes by undetected, animates Schirmer’s curiosities and work.
